Mary Burrard (d. 1944)

c. 1890s

Portrait of Mary Burrard, wife of Henry Sanford Pakenham-Mahon (1851-1922). According to Ann Morrow in her book Picnic in a Foreign Land  Mary was "such a great beauty that people would stand on walls and each other's shoulders to catch a glimpse of her." Mary was famous not only for her looks but also because her waist measured just 16 inches, the height of fashion in the late Victorian and early Edwardian period.
