The Denunciation Clumny

Courtesy of Gale Cengage Learning
10 December 1847

An open letter written by Father McDermott in which he denies denouncing Major Mahon from the altar. In the letter he talks about obnoxious landlords, and about the 'serf' informant who was tempted to concot his story for a cash reward. His denial reads as follows 'I now have to assure the public, by the most solemn asservations a clergyman can utter, that the late Major Mahon was never denounced, nor even his name mentioned, from any chapel altar in Strokestown, or within 20 miles of Strokestown, in any direction, on any Sunday before his death.'
