Denis Mahon to John Ross Mahon, 5 June 1847

National Library of Ireland, Packenham Mahon Papers

5 June 1847

A letter discussing the emigration plan. Some of the costs are outlined here. There is discussion of a 'third batch' and it is hoped that it might be possible to clear one townland. Major Mahon is anxious not to fund the passage of those who have been withholding rent as part of a rent strike or 'combination'. At the end of the letter we learn that evictions are taking place on the estate, as there is mention of the sheriff assisting in taking possession of lands that they had obtained 'haberes' against.
