Strokestown Relief Committee to the Lord Lieutenant, 25 June 1846

Courtesy of the Irish National Archives
25 June 1846

A letter from Major Denis Mahon, chairman of the Strokestown Relief Committee, describing the 'distressed nature of the neighbourhood' and the 'very large and over grown population of the district'. The committee had raised £85.00 in subscription money, which they felt was inadequate to meet the needs of the hungry. The last page here is a transcription of the letter with a draft reply written as brown annotations. It notes that a treasurer's certificate would have to be sent to state that the money had all been collected. The reply also notes the number of free places in Roscommon Workhouse, this number being 516.
