Strokestown Relief Committee to the Lord Lieutenant, 26 December 1847

Courtesy of the Irish National Archives
26 December 1847

A letter from the Strokestown Relief Committee to the Lord Lieutenant about the opening of a 'soup shop'. The letter includes a subscription list, with Major Mahon's donation of £20 being the highest donation from a private individual. The brown annotaions on the letter are those made when it was read, processed and replied to by the Relief Commission in Dublin. They state that they cannot make a donation towards the price of a boiler (often they matched the funding provided by local subscription). They also note that the capacity of the Roscommon Workhouse is 900 and that on the 5th December there were 979 inmates there.
